Wonderfully refreshing and graphically astounding. The level of detail that is done in the habitat and inhabitants of the planet Pandora is refreshing, alien, yet, familiar at the same time. Although the action in this movie is well done, it also builds on other themes, such as self-development and enlightenment. The script is well written and the characters are well developed with quality interaction with not only their environment, but with each other as well. Although rather long (2 hours and 40 minutes), the plot (simple, but well written) is enjoyable. A must see for those of you that loved the space-fantasy era that rose up in the 80's that gave birth to the Thundercats and other cult classics.
After watching this movie I had to go home and draw this (warning: contains nudity): Dancing Na'vi
Dark and edgy, this film has a very unremarkable start with what you think is your average Joe, however, like most things in life, most things are not what they seem. What is most intriguing about this film is the transformation that is apparent in the main character, who beings as the antagonist, then, due to circumstance, becomes the unwilling hero of the film. Not for those with weak stomachs, The Collector is very graphic and brings to mind the first SAW. Relativly short (only 88 minutes), The Collector keeps your attention with inventive traps and graphic kills. The tag line for this movie is "He always takes one", see if your clever enough to find out who is the Collector's final victim. The plot is simple, but well played without convoluted layers to peel through as you watch, the camera angles throughout the film are unique and claustrophobic.
Another wonderful, but slightly grungy film produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. You will find echoes of previous Tim Burton films in 9 (such as his love for at least one character wearing stripes), but it is truly its own. Although rated PG-13, I think a younger audience would certainly enjoy this film (its plot is simple and easy to follow, with plenty of character tension and action). Violence, although mild, is apparent -I found the violence comparable to that of NIHM or The Dark Crystal- in its post-apocalyptic setting where all the humans have perished an interesting twist is apparent in the movie as it touches on ancient beliefs of homunculi and alchemy. The graphics in this movie are definitely the film, however, if you seek in-depth plot clarity, I would certainly suggest another film.
Personally, I do not watch many Comedy Romances, however, My Life in Ruins had me smiling and laughing with its quirky characters and awkward oh-no-I-am-naked-in-church situations. Although no My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the film comes off as warm, engaging, and a bit endearing with plenty of cultural barriers that will make you think twice about: A) Trusting your tour guide B) Learning another language C) Booking a Tour Bus with A/C. The plot, although simple, is filled with wonderful character interaction, beautiful scenery, and great costuming. For something to just sit back and relax to (with a few giggles) this is a wonderful film, but for someone looking for a little more, they may find the film lacking a bit of direction (but then again, isn't everything now and then?).
